Monkeynaut IPA in cans – May 2012!!!

The long wait is nearly over. This month, we will be firing up our new canning line and putting our flagship beer, Monkeynaut IPA, in cans and shipping them to our distributor! We have set a tentative date of Wednesday, May 9, for our first can run, so we hope to be on store shelves near you within days of that auspicious event!

Many people have been asking us why we chose cans. The short answer is that MANY craft brewers in American are switching to cans. Oskar Blues started the craft can revolution back in 2002, and more and more breweries are following suit, including such big names as New Belgium and Sierra Nevada. According to www.craftcans.com, 179 CRAFT breweries are now canning a total of 561 beers in 73 different styles. And, to find out why, here are a few of the reasons listed by the progenitors of the movement, Oskar Blues, on their website at www.oskarblues.com:

* Cans keep beer incredibly fresh by fully protecting it from light and oxygen
* Cans are highly portable, allowing craft beer lovers to easily enjoy great beer in places where glass bottles are not ideal or allowed: the beach, pool, boats, trails, rivers, slopes, hot tubs, bath tubs, golf courses and so on…
* Unlike cans of old, the modern aluminum can is lined with a water-based coating so beer and metal never touch, and there is no exchange of metallic flavor
* Cans are the most easily and frequently recycled beverage package in the world, free of glass breakage issues, and less fuel-consuming to ship (cans enable Oskar Blues to reduce its fuel costs and carbon footprint for shipped beer by 35%)
* A recycled aluminum can generates 95% less pollution than one made from scratch and requires 96% less energy
* 1 recycled can saves the energy equivalent of 6 ounces of gas, or the electricity to power a guitar amplified for 2 hours

Add to that the fact that they are easier to stack/transport, quicker to chill, and a lot less likely to be broken over your head in a barfight. In other words, the question you should be left asking at this point is “Why WOULDN’T you can?”

Because, as a craft beer lover, whether it’s in bottle or can, you should be pouring it into a glass! Preferably the proper glassware for the style, but a shaker pint at the very least. Anything less is just downright uncivilized.

At any rate, friends, look for the brightly packaged Monkeynaut IPA on store shelves in the next few weeks. And if your favorite watering hole, package store, grocer or dining establishment doesn’t have it, ask them to order it. It’s not going to drink itself.

Irish Cinco De Mayo is upon us! Whatever that means!

That’s right, folks. This Saturday, May 5, 2012, come down to the brewery and join us for an Irish Cinco De Mayo celebration! The Whiskey River Kings will be joining us with their awesome brand of acoustic-electric-Irish-folk-rock, and Dallas Mill Deli will have their food truck on hand to provide some tasty victuals. AND, last but not least, we will be rolling out the next batch of our Rocket City Red! The event will be from 3 PM until 10 PM at Straight to Ale Brewing (located at 3200 Leeman Ferry Road in Huntsville, AL for the uninitiated) and the band will kick off at 6 PM. So, don your sombreros and wear some green, caballeros and senoras, because it is sure to be a good time!

Well, folks. The results of the al.com beer Bracket are in! Straight to Ale’s flagship beer, Monkeynaut IPA, beat out 31 other local and regional craft beers to be named the favorite local brew! And, well, our other beers did pretty fantastically, too … some were beaten only by other STA beers! We’re grateful to all those who voted, and we’re really glad you like our brews. We’re humbled and honored to be picked out of such great company, too, as we have a lot of personal and professional respect for our fellow craft brewers in Alabama. We look forward to the day that any one of us can stop in a restaurant or bar anywhere across the U.S. and find our beers and those of our fellow Alabama brewers. So spread the word, folks! If your favorite bar or restaurant doesn’t carry local beers, ask them to! If your local watering hole doesn’t have STA on tap and you would like them to, let them know! We’d be more than happy to accommodate.

Join STA at Mellow Mushroom in south Huntsville for Local Beer Mondays in April!

Hey, folks! Straight to Ale will be the featured local brewery every Monday in April at the Mellow Mushroom on Cecil Ashburn Drive in Huntsville, so come out and enjoy some fine pizza, calzones, salads, sandwiches and other sundries and some great brews! I (Rich) will be on hand each night to talk about the beers we have on tap and give away some schwag, so mark the dates on your calendars and come join us! We’ll have multiple taps with a few extras along the way and maybe even a special release on the last Monday! Events will be Monday, April 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30!

STA now on tap in Cullman, AL!

We had a huge night last night with our kickoff event at The Local Standard in Cullman, where the beer named after Cullman’s most famous monk made its debut in his adopted hometown! Tons of thirsty folks came out to enjoy Brother Joseph’s Belgian Dubbel and the fantastic food, courtesy of owners Bill and Michelle Tomlin. Cullman has just been wet for about a year now, but it was long overdue for some craft beer … especially of the local kind! And what better place for our beachhead in the Cullman area than an establishment that has LOCAL in the name, right? We’re very excited to be on tap there and may even be expanding our presence on Bill’s tap towers as well. We could not be happier to lend our support – liquid and otherwise – to a homegrown eatery and drinkery of such quality! Drink (and eat) LOCAL!

St. Patrick’s Day Blowout and Rocket City Red Release!

We’re gearing up for a HUGE St. Patrick’s Day here in Huntsville and other cities throughout the state. Saturday will mark the release of our brand new Rocket City Red, a traditional Irish Red Ale that clocks in at an easy drinking 5.0 ABV. We will be kicking off the night early with a release party at the brewery from 3 PM to 8 PM (and possibly beyond), featuring music from The Whiskey River Kings beginning at 5 PM and Irish Stew provided by the fine folks at Anaheim Chili! So, come party with us and look for Rocket City Red wherever fine craft beers are sold!

Four new specialty taps at the taproom!

We’ve just added four new taps at the Strait to Ale taproom, where we are featuring some rare treats for our visitors … including a few out-of-seasonals and some highly experimental brews you can’t find anywhere else (yet). So drop by and try them! Our year-round offerings and a seasonal or two can still be found on tap at the main bar.

The Straight To Ale taproom is finally open!

Hours are Thursday through Saturday, from 3 PM till 8 PM.

Swing by the brewery and sample some of beers with us when you get the chance.

We’re located at 3200 Leeman Ferry Rd. Huntsville, AL 35801. Turn in beside the Matrix Gym, and we’re in the back on the right.

We will be closed on Dec 24th.
